Modal Verbs

Modal verbs modify the meaning of the main verb. They're essential for expressing ability, permission, obligation, and desire.

The Six Modal Verbs

Present Tense Conjugation

Modal verbs have irregular conjugation patterns. Note: ich and er/sie/es forms are the same.

können (can, to be able to)

Ich kann Deutsch sprechen.
(I can speak German.)

Kannst du mir helfen?
(Can you help me?)

müssen (must, to have to)

Ich muss morgen arbeiten.
(I have to work tomorrow.)

Du musst mehr schlafen.
(You must sleep more.)

wollen (to want to)

Ich will nach Hause gehen.
(I want to go home.)

Was willst du essen?
(What do you want to eat?)

Warning: "will" in German means "want", not future tense.

sollen (should, to be supposed to)

Du sollst mehr Wasser trinken.
(You should drink more water.)

Was soll ich machen?
(What should I do?)

Er soll um 9 Uhr kommen.
(He's supposed to come at 9.)

dürfen (may, to be allowed to)

Darf ich hier rauchen?
(May I smoke here?)

Du darfst nicht so laut sein.
(You're not allowed to be so loud.)

Hier darf man nicht parken.
(You can't park here.)

mögen (to like)

Ich mag Schokolade.
(I like chocolate.)

Magst du Kaffee?
(Do you like coffee?)

Note: mögen is often used without an infinitive (to express liking something).

möchten (would like to): Subjunctive of mögen

This is the polite form for expressing wishes:

Ich möchte einen Kaffee, bitte.
(I would like a coffee, please.)

Möchtest du mitkommen?
(Would you like to come along?)

Was möchten Sie bestellen?
(What would you like to order?)

Sentence Structure with Modals

The modal verb is conjugated and in second position. The main verb goes to the end as an infinitive:

Position:    1        2           ...        End
            Ich      kann         Deutsch    sprechen.
            (I can speak German.)

            Sie      muss         heute      arbeiten.
            (She has to work today.)

            Wir      wollen       morgen     ins Kino gehen.
            (We want to go to the cinema tomorrow.)

Questions with Modals

Kannst du schwimmen?
(Can you swim?)

Muss ich das machen?
(Do I have to do that?)

Wann willst du kommen?
(When do you want to come?)

Past Tense of Modals (Präteritum)

Modal verbs typically use Präteritum in spoken German because it's simpler than Perfekt:

Ich konnte nicht kommen.
(I couldn't come.)

Sie musste früh aufstehen.
(She had to get up early.)

Er wollte Pizza essen.
(He wanted to eat pizza.)

Wir durften nicht rausgehen.
(We weren't allowed to go out.)

Negation

nicht müssen vs. nicht dürfen

nicht müssen = don't have to (no obligation) nicht dürfen = must not, not allowed to (prohibition)

Du musst nicht kommen.
(You don't have to come. It's optional.)

Du darfst nicht kommen.
(You must not come. / You're not allowed to come.)

kein müssen = brauchen nicht zu

Du brauchst nicht zu kommen.
(You don't need to come.)

Special Uses

können

1. Ability: Ich kann schwimmen. (I can swim.)
2. Permission: Kann ich gehen? (Can I go?)
3. Possibility: Das kann sein. (That could be.)

sollen

1. Obligation: Du sollst mehr lernen. (You should study more.)
2. Hearsay: Er soll reich sein. (He's said to be rich.)
3. Suggestion: Soll ich helfen? (Should I help?)

dürfen

1. Permission: Darf ich? (May I?)
2. Prohibition: Du darfst nicht! (You must not!)
3. Polite requests: Darf ich Sie etwas fragen? (May I ask you something?)

Common Expressions with Modals

Ich muss mal.
(I need to go, to the bathroom. Colloquial.)

Das kann ich mir vorstellen.
(I can imagine that.)

Das darf doch nicht wahr sein!
(That can't be true! Expresses disbelief.)

Ich will nichts davon hören.
(I don't want to hear anything about it.)

Was soll das?
(What's that supposed to mean? / What's going on?)

Das mag sein.
(That may be.)

Ich möchte lieber...
(I'd rather...)

Ich muss jetzt gehen.
(I have to go now.)

Du sollst nicht so viel arbeiten.
(You shouldn't work so much.)

Hier darf man nicht rauchen.
(You're not allowed to smoke here.)

Ich möchte einen Tisch für zwei reservieren.
(I'd like to reserve a table for two.)

Wir konnten das Problem nicht lösen.
(We couldn't solve the problem.)

Er musste drei Stunden warten.
(He had to wait three hours.)
